Marathon Highlights: Doucet Breaks New Brunswick Record
17 avril 2017

61 New Brunswick runners made the trip to run the prestigious Boston Marathon, however it was Shelley Doucet from Quispamsis that stole the show.

Shelley put her name in the record books with a time of 2:46:29, a new all-time New Brunswick women’s record. Doucet’s performance allowed her to finish as top New Brusnwicker (male and female), 29th overall among women, and 2nd among Canadian women!

The previous record was set back on April 18th, 2011 also in Boston by Dr. Paula Keating of Miramichi, who had finished the event in 2:47:26. This year, Keating was the 2nd New Brunswick woman to cross the line in 3:01:47, finishing an incredible 2nd in her age group of 50-54! The 3rd New Brunswick woman to cross the finish line was Corinne Fournier of Saint John in a time of 3:28:23.

The top male New Brunswick finisher was Colin McQuade of Riverview who finished the 42.2km course in 2:46:47. Nathaniel Couture of Fredericton was the 2nd New Brusnwicker to finish the event with a time of 02:47:50, while Daniel LeBlanc of Dieppe rounded out the top 3 with a time of 02:50:02.

Also importantly not to forget New Brunswick native Réjean Chiasson (who now calls Toronto home) who finished 2nd among Canadian men in a time of 02:32:04.

“WOW! Simply an outstanding run by Shelley,” said RunNB Executive Director Gabriel LeBlanc. “I know her training was going extremely well and this is a testament to her hard work.”

“We are extremely proud of all the New Brunswick athletes that completed the Boston Marathon,” added LeBlanc. “We wish them a quick recovery from this event and a safe travel home.”

Doucet will likely be selected to compete for New Brunswick at the International Jeux de la Francophonie in Ivory Coast, July 15th-31st. Team Announcement will take place the first week of May.
